About the Rikers Public Memory Project
The Rikers Public Memory Project (RPMP) collects and makes visible the stories of people most impacted by Rikers Island, to mobilize action toward repairing its generational harms and interrupting the dehumanizing narratives about people harmed by Rikers. Our vision is a New York City and society that has chosen a culture of care over punishment.
Our work is guided by values of accountability, care, community, and systemic change. We center the voices and leadership of people directly impacted by incarceration, and we use oral history, cultural programming, and community healing to shift narratives and build power.
The Role
The Community Care Coordinator is a new role at RPMP designed to deepen our support for narrators (people who have shared oral histories in our archive), as well as help develop our memorial quilt workshops, healing circles, and fellowship programs. This position is ideal for someone with a background in social work, community care, or healing justice who wants to help create trauma-informed, supportive, and culturally-rooted spaces for directly impacted communities. This role begins part-time with the possibility of growing into a full-time staff position within the next year.

- Collaborate on activating the archive through targeted story sharing, strategic archive building, and storytelling-focused programs
- Develop and suggest protocols that promote narrative care, including narrator protection and informed consent strategies
- Help maintain a database of narrators, ensuring accurate and updated contact information for ongoing community connection
Community Programs
- Plan and facilitate gatherings for narrators to connect, share, and network

- Support the development of a community healing curriculum and quilt-making workshops
Narrative Change Fellowship
- Support the fellowship program through outreach, candidate support during the application process, and coordination of capacity building and networking opportunities
