About the Rikers Public Memory Project
The Rikers Public Memory Project (RPMP) collects and makes visible the stories of people most impacted by Rikers Island, to mobilize action toward repairing its generational harms and interrupting the dehumanizing narratives about people harmed by Rikers. Our vision is a New York City and society that has chosen a culture of care over punishment.
Our work is guided by values of accountability, care, community, and systemic change. We center the voices and leadership of people directly impacted by incarceration, and we use oral history, cultural programming, and community healing to shift narratives and build power.
The Role
We are seeking a part-time Program Assistant to provide administrative and operational support for our programs, fellowships, and exhibits. This is an ideal opportunity for students or early-career professionals who are passionate about narrative change, social justice, and community healing. You’ll gain hands-on experience supporting a community-centered cultural project, while developing skills in administration, event planning, and public programming.
Responsibilities
Administrative Support
- Monitor the RPMP inbox and direct inquiries to the appropriate team member
- Support the submission of grant proposals and reports to our fiscal sponsor
- Assist with onboarding contractors in Gusto
- Support insurance audits through data entry and record-keeping

- Assist with planning and logistics for fellowships, exhibits, and public programs
- Support the installation and de-installation of exhibits
- Provide back-up support on oral history collection days
- Monitor partner accounts on social media and share updates on events and advocacy campaigns
